It’s also the official language of the sky – all pilots have to speak and identify themselves in English.


Not only is Shakespeare widely considered as one of the greatest dramatists of all time, but over his lifespan he added an incredible amount of about 1,700 words to the English language by changing nouns into verbs, verbs into nouns, connecting some words with each other and adding prefixes or suffixes to others.

10. Incomprehensibilities (21 letters)

Impossible to comprehend. In the 1990’s, incomprehensibilities set the record as the longest word “in common usage.”

8. Thyroparathyroidectomized (25 letters)

Definition: A medical term that defines the excision of both the thyroid and parathyroid glands.

7. Honorificabilitudinitatibus (27 letters)

Definition: The state of being able to achieve honours. Longest word in  Shakespeare's works; longest word in the English language featuring alternating consonants and vowels(Latin)

6. Antidisestablishmentarianism (28 letters)

Definition: The political position of opposing  disestablishment. Longest non-contrived and nontechnical word.Not all dictionaries accept it due to lack of usage.

5. Floccinaucinihilipilification (29 letters)

Definition: The act of regarding something as unimportant. Longest unchallenged nontechnical word.

4. Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism (30 letters)

Definition: The act of regarding something as unimportant. Longest unchallenged nontechnical word.

3. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (34 letters)

Definition: A medical disorder.Longest non-contrived word in a major dictionary.

2. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (36 letters)

Definition: Unclear in source work, has been cited as a nonsense word.
Made popular in the Mary Poppins film and musical.

Definition: The disease silicosis
